Massage Chairs – Enjoy Extra Luxury in Your Home

January 4th, 2010

Regular massage has been used for thousands of years as a means to improve physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. People continue to enjoy regular massage as a means to unwind, relax, and even recover from physical injury. However, weekly or even monthly appointments at the local spa or massage studio can prove expensive and may often mean booking an appointment that is less than convenient for you. With your own home massage chair you can enjoy the benefits of regular massage but without the inconvenience or added expense of visiting the spa.

The Healthy Option

Massage really does offer a wide variety of health benefits. It loosens muscles and relieves stress and tension, and it can also be used to clear and focus the mind improving mental alertness and concentration levels. Furthermore, regular massage improves the performance of the lymphatic system which detoxifies the body by purging unwanted waste products from the system. It can even improve posture and prevent cramps and muscle spasms before they occur or treat them when they do.

The Less Expensive Alternative

Unfortunately, visiting a spa or massage studio for regular massage sessions can be a very expensive route to take. Not only do you have to pay the hourly fee for your massage but you should also tip the masseuse and you will need to pay to travel to the spa and back again, and you may even need to pay parking. For one person this proves very costly, but if your partner wants a massage too then you can increase this cost significantly. A home massage chair removes all of these ongoing costs while allowing you the benefit of enjoying a massage whenever you want one.

Added Convenience

Booking spa or masseuse appointments often means making appointments that are less than convenient for you. You will almost certainly be battling it out with others if you need a time slot that fits in around your working day. What’s more, travelling to the spa after a day at work or during rush hour can add even more stress to your life. Having a home massage chair means you never need to make an appointment again and you can enjoy a massage whenever you want one.

Enjoy A Massage Before Or After Work

As well as being a convenient alternative to visiting the spa, a home massage chair offers the flexibility of having a massage whenever you want one. Had a difficult day at work? Maybe you’ve got an important meeting in the morning and want to ensure you’re able to fully concentrate on the task at hand. You can unwind or increase your concentration level with a massage any time of the day. Massage has also been proven to work effectively as a sleep aid and you can enjoy a late night massage to help you get to sleep.

Reward Yourself With A Luxurious Massage

Spending some time to yourself is a critical part of everyday life. With a massage chair you can take the time to unwind and to relax without having to worry about work, money, or family problems. Life really is too short to not spare some time for yourself and a massage chair provides you with a luxurious and healthy way to enjoy yourself and spend some time alone to unwind. Pamper yourself with your own home massage chair.

Electric Massage Chairs – Almost as Good as a Massage Therapist

December 29th, 2009

Electric massage chairs provide for an interesting intersection between an inanimate object and a human being. Our bodies get tense and sore. We seek relief through many means, and through many creative ways. And innovative people figured out a way to combine moving metal rollers and kneaders, air bags, leather, wood, and electronics to make some pretty amazing machines to help us find that relief.

It should be acknowledged that a really good massage simply can’t be beat. Of course, the human touch from a real massage therapist is the best for getting at the exact tense places in our bodies, and it’s nice to be able to talk to the therapist about exactly what is going on. However, you might be surprised at the effectiveness of electric massage chairs. The technology that goes into these engineering wonders is really quite astounding. A really good massage chair can provide an amazing reprieve from tension and stress. Plus, you don’t have to take off your clothes around a total stranger, act like it doesn’t bother you, and try to relax through the massage itself. Of course, that sort of thing doesn’t bother some people, so that may not be that big of a consideration. Regardless of what you prefer, a massage of any sort is usually a good thing.

The other day I stopped by a local store that carries electric massage chairs. I took the opportunity to treat myself to about 10 minutes in one of the higher end, luxury massage chairs. In the past, I’ve only experienced really low end, entry-level chairs that usually just amount to a vibration effect in the body. These usually leave you feeling frustrated and sort of upset because they really don’t get at the spots you need them to, or with near enough pressure or focus to do any good. The thing I noticed right away was the grin that kept crossing my face. It just felt good!

Granted, electric massage chairs can be pretty spendy, but when I was enjoying my time in the one I was sitting in, I didn’t care how much it cost. In fact, as I sat there I kept thinking to myself that a couple grand for this sort of experience whenever I want it would be a small price to pay. It was incredible how, what on the outside looks like a simple chair, can actually be so effective. The air bags around the sides and backs of my calves felt so good. The rollers and kneaders that worked up and down my back also went in and out, and even sometimes did a circular motion. I had the remote set on “all” so I got a huge variety of speeds, motions, pressures, and movement.

As someone with a troubled back, I can highly recommend any number of electric massage chairs. They are effective and convenient. The really good ones are expensive, but when compared to the cost of regular visits to a massage therapist, one would actually pay for itself before too long. The first time the rollers went up my spine, they actually set my back. It felt, and sounded, like a chiropractor had done something. I felt like that little “pop” sound alone saved me about $80 bucks. Electric massage chairs are definitely worth the price. I’ll be buying one just as soon as I can.

How Shiatsu Massage Chairs Came Into Existence

November 29th, 2009

The shiatsu massage chair has become very popular in recent years. It is based on the ancient Japanese massage technique of shiatsu, which differs from basic Western massage techniques. Western massage relies more upon kneading and rubbing, but shiatsu is based upon applying pressure. This is even evident in its name, the direct translation from Japanese means finger (shi) pressure (atsu). An experienced practitioner will not only use their fingers, but also their knuckles, elbows, palms, and thumbs, and a few will even use their knees and feet when they need to apply heavy pressure!

The Japanese regard shiatsu so highly that it is a regulated and licensed medical therapy in Japan by their Ministry of Health and Welfare, whose official definition is: Shiatsu technique refers to the use of fingers and palm of one’s hand to apply pressure to particular sections on the surface of the body for the purpose of correcting the imbalances of the body, and for maintaining and promoting health. It is also a method contributing to the healing of specific illnesses.

Today in Japan there are two main schools of shiatsu: one based on western anatomical and physiological findings, and the other based on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

The original school of thought practices shiatsu based on TCM uses shiatsu massage to work the acupuncture points along the body’s energy channels (also called meridians) to balance a persons energy flow. This is a great form of treatment for Westerners who are interested in acupuncture but are put off by the needles.

A formal school of shiatsu therapy based upon Western medicine was first opened in Japan in 1940, but it was not until the 1970’s when shiatsu techniques started to appear outside Japan. Today over a dozen philosophies or variations exist of shiatsu, and since the 1980’s, most of these variations have occurred in North America and Europe.

Though there is little scientific support for the healing properties of a shiatsu massage, no one can dispute the overall feeling of good health and stress relief that is brought on by one of these massages. As massage has become more main stream in western society, the massage industry boomed. Companies have sought ways to make a massage accessible to more Americans. This brought on the massage chair industry in the 1980’s. These chairs have slowly become more deluxe, and with the interest in shiatsu, the popularity of the shiatsu massage chair has boomed. This has especially been great for individuals who do not feel comfortable going to a massage therapist, they can enjoy a massage in the privacy of their own home.

Almost any shiatsu massage chair on the market today offers a variety of massage techniques, including compression, kneading, percussion, and rolling. The application of pressure that is key in shiatsu massage is applied in chairs by rollers. In a good quality chair, you can control the rollers to move up and down your back, you can control the width between the rollers, and also how much pressure is being applied.

Though a quality shiatsu massage chair may seem like it would cost a lot of money, it is really an investment in your health. It is like having your own personal massage therapist on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year! These chairs do not provide just a back massage, but also neck, leg and foot massages. Besides relaxing your muscles, a shiatsu massage chair also rejuvenates the mind and body and reduces fatigue, providing a whole body experience. I have never met a person who regretted purchasing a shiatsu massage chair.

Portable Massage Chairs: How Are You Supposed to Sit on One?

November 23rd, 2009

I have finished a triathlon and seen portable massage chairs set up in tents afterwards. I have also seen them set up at Farmer’s Markets and in airports and shopping malls among other places. Now, I have to admit, I do not understand these chairs. It looks like if you sat down in it wrong, you may never get out. It almost resembles a fancy and complicated piece of work out equipment. So, I figured I had better google “how to sit in a portable massage chair. ” It only took a few minutes to find what I was looking for, first a brief explanation and then a picture. Since I don’t want to infringe upon anyone’s picture rights, lets see if I can explain how one of these things is used.

When I was first reading the description of a portable massage chair, it mentioned that all parts are fully adjustable, including the arm rest. So my first question was, where is the arm rest? That was easily answered when I discovered the basic seating position. You do not sit on it with your back to the back rest. It is not even a back rest! You sit in portable massage chairs backwards, so officially, what I thought was a back rest is really the chest cushion. Which is helpful, because I was also wondering what the chest cushion was when I read the description.

So, you sit on the seat with your body facing the angled chest chest cushion (so officially you are leaning forward). The head support at the top with the hole in it is for you to place face, and the two padded cushions are for your legs, kind of like you are kneeling. The cushion on the back of the chair is the armrest. All is held together with a strong metal (usually aluminum) frame.

It is great that portable massage chairs are fully adjustable. One manufacturer that I was reading about says that their chairs will fit anybody between four and seven feet tall. The chairs are designed to be quite lightweight, many around 15 lbs. , so they truly are portable. They fold up easily and most even come with a carrying case.

Since portable massage chairs are often used in public places, they are preferred over portable massage tables because people feel more comfortable using them when their is potential for an audience. The portable massage table is more often used for therapists who travel to their clients.

Sometimes people are concerned that their massage will not be as good on a chair versus a massage table. But have no worries! These chairs are ergonomically designed, and not just for the person receiving the massage. But its design also makes it very easy for the therapist to give an effective massage. On a massage table, the therapist is usually working from the side, which puts their body at an awkward and difficult angle. A therapist using portable massage chairs puts less strain on their own body.

Portable massage chairs are perfect for giving and receiving neck, shoulder and back massages. Though I may skip getting a public massage at the local Farmer’s Market, the next time I see one of these set up after a triathlon or running event, I think I just may give it a try.
